- 听言不可不察,不察则善不善不分,善不善不分,乱莫大焉
- 听言不爽,非圣人不能。根以有成之心,蜚以近似之语,加之以不避嫌之事,当仓卒无及之际,怀隔阂难辩之恨,父子可以相贼,死亡可以不顾,怒室阋墙,稽唇反目,何足道哉!古今国家之败亡,此居强半。圣人忘于无言,智者照以先觉,贤者熄于未著,刚者绝其口语,忍者断于不行。非此五者,无良术矣。
- 听言之道,徐审为先,执不信之心与执必信之心,其失一也。惟圣人能先觉,其次莫如徐审。
- 听言观行,是取人之道;乐其言而不问其人,是取善之道。今人恶闻善言,便訑訑曰:“彼能言而行不逮,言何足取?”是弗思也。吾之听言也,为其言之有益于我耳,苟益于我,人之贤否奚问焉。衣敝枲者市文绣,食糟糠者市粱肉,将以人弃之乎?
